Real Talk Case Study: UCO Network – Revolutionizing Used Cooking Oil Recycling through Blockchain

REAL TALK CASE STUDY

An Interview with UCO Network

Founded in March 2021 by Miguel Costa & Camille Sirgi, UCO Network is a Dubai-based blockchain platform aimed at transforming the Used Cooking Oil (UCO) recycling industry globally. Their innovative approach leverages blockchain technology to create a comprehensive ecosystem for sustainable environmental practices.

Can you describe UCO Network in a few sentences?

UCO Network is a blockchain platform revolutionizing the Used Cooking Oil (UCO) recycling industry. Our ecosystem is powered by two key components: the Oily dApp and the Collection App. Oily serves as a community engagement and awareness tool where users can track contributions, earn rewards, and participate in the UCO economy. The Collection App streamlines professional UCO collection, managing logistics and pickups. Together, these tools connect individual contributors with professional collectors, enhancing efficiency and transparency in UCO recycling.

What is the primary mission or goal of your project?

Our primary mission is to significantly increase global Used Cooking Oil (UCO) recycling rates. By connecting individual contributors with efficient collection services through our dual-app ecosystem, we aim to reduce environmental pollution, boost sustainable biofuel production, and create economic opportunities in the circular economy.

What are the key social or environmental impacts of your project?

Our project delivers multiple significant impacts:

  • Increased UCO recycling rates, reducing improper disposal and water pollution
  • Enhanced production of sustainable biofuels, lowering carbon emissions
  • Economic empowerment for both individual contributors and professional collectors
  • Greater transparency and efficiency in the UCO supply chain

How do you measure the impact of your project?

We track our impact through several key metrics:

  • Total volume of UCO collected through our ecosystem
  • Number of active users on Oily and professional collectors using the Collection App
  • Estimated reduction in water pollution and CO2 emissions from increased recycling

Can you share a story about how UCO Network has positively impacted a community?

A remarkable change we've observed is how our Oily dApp educates people about the environmental implications of improper UCO disposal. Most users are initially unaware of the problem, but after learning through our platform, they actively change their behavior and understand their potential impact.

What cool tech does UCO Network use to power its magic?

UCO Network utilizes blockchain technology to ensure transparency and traceability in the UCO recycling process. Our standout innovation is our dual-app ecosystem:

  • Oily dApp: Engages the community, allowing individuals to track their UCO contributions and earn rewards
  • Collection App: Streamlines operations for professional collectors, optimizing routes and managing pickups

What are the standout features that make UCO Network unique?

Our ecosystem creates an end-to-end solution that bridges the gap between individual contributors and professional collectors, addressing inefficiencies in the traditional UCO market.

What have been the biggest twists and turns in UCO Network's journey?

Our journey has involved continuously refining our dual-app ecosystem based on user feedback and market needs. We remain focused on enhancing the synergy between Oily and the Collection App to further streamline the UCO recycling process.

Why did you choose to join Blockchain for Good Alliance?

We joined to collaborate with other projects using blockchain for positive environmental impact. We've already begun forming valuable partnerships through the alliance.

What advice would you give to someone starting a blockchain project for social good?

Focus on creating tangible, real-world solutions that address specific pain points in your chosen industry.

How can others get involved or support your mission?

  • Individuals can use the Oily dApp to participate in UCO recycling via VeChain or XDC
  • Professional collectors can contact us to start using the Collection App
  • Spreading awareness about proper UCO disposal helps support our mission

UCO Network is committed to revolutionizing the UCO recycling industry. We're always open to partnerships that can help us expand our impact and bring us closer to a world where UCO recycling is efficient, rewarding, and universally practiced.
